About our sovereign nation and Washoe Culture
The Washoe People (Waší∙šiw) have inhabited the lands surrounding Lake Tahoe since time immemorial, long before explorers like John Charles Fremont documented the Sierra Nevada mountains. Our ancestral territory stretches from Honey Lake down past Sonora Pass, encompassing the Carson Valley, Alpine County, and the Pine Nut Mountains. Our tribal heritage reveals how our ancestors thrived in harsh winters and shifting seasons, moving strategically between lowland winter settlements and summer encampments at the lake.
The Waší∙šiw life
As a distinct Indigenous people bridging Great Basin and California cultures, the Waší∙šiw have long maintained a deep connection with the natural environment. We gathered pine nuts (ťágɨm) and medicinal plants, while our fishers harvested native cutthroat trout. Gold and silver rushes disrupted this balance, altering traditional Washoe life and impacting our natural resources through logging and commercial fishing.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California operates as a modern sovereign government based in Gardnerville, Nevada. Our tribal government oversees a wide array of commercial operations, retail businesses, and local government programs. We also provide comprehensive business solutions, including managed IT services, business continuity planning, and virtualization to support our communities.
